The extreme scale ranges in both space and time involved in the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process and the geometrical complexity of the parts produced by LPBF technology call for flexible numerical approaches. Therefore, immersed boundary methods seem to offer a valid alternative to the traditional mesh-conforming finite element method. In the present contribution, we adopt two methods of such a family of numerical methods to investigate some of the most challenging problems in the LPBF process and product simulations.
